By the 1840s avocets were extinct in the UK due to egg collecting, hunting and drainage of land. They re-established themselves during WWII on the East Anglian coastline as it became unintentionally flooded. After the first pairs were discovered at the Minsmere Level, it became an RSPB reserve in 1947.
